{"id":555,"date":"2012-11-26T00:05:47","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T05:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dannycraigfoundation.org\/?page_id=555"},"modified":"2013-02-07T11:00:17","modified_gmt":"2013-02-07T16:00:17","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dannycraigfoundation.org\/index.php\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 20, 2001, my first child, Danny, was born with \u2018complications\u2019.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the Naval hospital misdiagnosed him after an erroneous catscan led them to believe that he was severely brain damaged and we began what would become a life changing traumatic ride.\u00a0\u00a0 We checked Danny into a home for disabled infants because of the supposed severity of his condition.\u00a0 The Home was overseen by doctors and caregivers associated with The Children\u2019s Hospital of the King\u2019s Daughters in Norfolk, VA.\u00a0 On Danny\u2019s second day at the home, we were sitting in the doctor\u2019s office when the results of a last minute requested MRI were faxed from the Naval hospital to the Home.\u00a0\u00a0 The doctor (Dr. Toland &#8211; we\u2019ll never forget him or his name and are forever grateful for his support during the initial weeks of Danny\u2019s life), looked up from the report and simply stated \u2018you need to take the Do Not Resuscitate\u2019 off this child right now \u2013 there is nothing wrong with his brain\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 Several painful weeks followed as we struggled to determine what was \u2018really wrong\u2019 with Danny.\u00a0 Military egos, medical missteps and first time parental insecurities resulted in a prolonged and painful journey which has ended up with our family being blessed by one of the most caring, compassionate and loving children you will ever meet.\u00a0 In addition to his love for others, Danny is an extremely intelligent \u2018old soul\u2019 who brings joy to everyone he meets.\u00a0 He has defied the odds and exceed the expectations of all who came into contact with him in the early days.\u00a0 His final diagnosis was Prader-Willi Syndrome.\u00a0 Following the diagnosis of brain damage, it was very easy to have a positive outlook regarding PWS and to aggressively begin interventions to ensure that Danny would do and be more than what the Internet declared.<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, I have vowed to never again accept what I am told without consideration nor allow others to control my right to protect those I love.\u00a0 Children are truly our most precious commodity and those with special needs give us a rare opportunity to receive the greatest of gifts \u2013 knowing that you have made a difference in someone\u2019s life.\u00a0 We are committed to helping children in need no matter what the need.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the same as those involved in the Gates Foundation:\u00a0 \u201cScientific and technological advances are making it possible to solve big, complicated problems like never before.
